Kampi Pool is one of the last places where Irrawaddy dolphins can be seen in their natural habitats. The Irrawaddy's dolphin is considered an endangered species, with only 80 to 100 individuals currently living in the Mekong, 15 to 20 of them in the Kampi pool. For this reason, a major project is being carried out in the Kampi pool and the 8 other existing pools by several NGOs and the Government to protect the dolphins from local fishing activities especially gill nets but also from the pollution of the river, the low amount of food source in the Mekong and potential threat of dam construction for electricity. At Kampi the project turned the local fishmen to be boat men who drive tourist to explore the dolphin as an alternative for them. There are several projects up stream too run by Cambodian Rural Development Organization.
